The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), in collaboration with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, recently organized a “Circularity Workshop” on “Extended Producer Responsibility Regime: An Innovative Policy Tool for Fostering a Sustainable Circular Economy in the Automotive Industry.” The workshop, held on 8th April 2024 in Mumbai, was part of SIAM’s Chakriyata (चक्रीयता) initiative, aiming to facilitate discussions and develop strategies for sustainable mobility through waste management, recycling, and circularity principles.
The workshop provided a platform for industry stakeholders and government representatives to engage in discussions on the benefits and challenges of implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) within the automotive sector. The event focused on promoting sustainable practices and aimed to gather insights into leveraging EPR as a strategic mechanism for achieving a circular economy in the automotive industry.
During the inaugural session, Mr. Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM, emphasized the auto industry’s commitment to sustainability and SIAM’s efforts to promote the recycling ecosystem. Mr. Sushant Naik, Chairman, SIAM Electric Mobility Group and Global Head-Government & Public Affairs, Tata Motors, highlighted SIAM Chakriyata’s (चक्रीयता) vision to harmonize economic growth, environmental integrity, and social equity in the automotive industry through the Extended Producer Responsibility framework.
The workshop also featured insights from industry experts and government representatives, including Mr. Avinash Dhakne, Member Secretary, MPCB, and Mr. Anand Kumar, Director & Divisional Head, WM-III Division, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), who provided perspectives on EPR norms and the recycling ecosystem.
Thematic sessions covered topics such as EPR Regime in Used Oil & Plastic Waste Management, ELV Management & Tyre Waste, and Battery Waste & E-Waste Management, featuring presentations from industry leaders and government officials.
The successful organisation of the circularity workshop demonstrated SIAM’s commitment to promoting circularity in the automotive sector and facilitating India’s move towards sustainable mobility. The event facilitated a rich exchange of ideas, best practices, and strategies.
