BENGALURU, India – Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, underscored the importance of developing domestic infrastructure during a recent event in Bengaluru. He laid the foundation stone for an Electric Vehicle (EV) testing facility at the National Test House (NTH).
Joshi stated, “India is blessed with talent, manpower, and potential, so we need to go forward and make more in India.” He emphasized the necessity of technology upgrades and the development of independent systems and infrastructure. The new EV battery testing facility will be the first of its kind in Karnataka.
The minister highlighted the government’s goal to have 30 percent of vehicles on Indian roads be electric by 2030, noting the importance of renewable energy for these vehicles. “We also want the power used for electric vehicles to be renewable, so we are promoting solar power in a big way,” he said. The initiative includes plans to install free solar setups for 1 crore households to ensure access to renewable power.

Joshi encouraged the NTH to expand its testing capabilities by training personnel and establishing additional facilities similar to the EV testing center. The NTH, operating under the Department of Consumer Affairs, has previously undertaken notable projects such as the Central Vista and Metro Rail.
“The government will provide all the support it needs to achieve this goal,” Joshi added, urging NTH to aim for becoming a Rs 100 crore company within three years. In addition to Bengaluru, plans are underway to set up EV testing facilities in Mumbai and Kolkata.
The Bengaluru facility will be equipped to conduct various tests on EV batteries, including electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), functional safety, durability, climate, and mechanical and material tests. According to Bharat Khera, Additional Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, this facility will serve as a comprehensive center for testing, ensuring that EVs meet stringent quality standards before reaching consumers. Anupam Mishra, Joint Secretary, noted that this development is expected to significantly benefit EV manufacturers in southern India.
On the occasion, Ashutosh Agarwal, Director of Legal Metrology, presented an International Organisation of Legal Metrology-approved certificate to Tatsuno India, a manufacturer of dispensing units for petrol pumps.
