Karnataka: Karnataka is set to launch its ‘Clean Mobility Policy,’ a comprehensive initiative aimed at revolutionizing the state’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. This policy, announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, aligns with Karnataka’s vision to become a leader in sustainable transportation.
Key Components of the Policy
- Incentives for Manufacturers and Users: The policy will offer financial incentives to both EV manufacturers and users, similar to the approach taken by states like Maharashtra and Delhi in their EV policies.
- Charging Stations Mandate: It mandates the installation of charging stations in commercial and government buildings, ensuring a robust charging network across the state. This strategy mirrors the efforts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in their policies to promote charging infrastructure.
- Public Transportation Integration: The policy encourages the adoption of electric vehicles in public transportation systems, mirroring the initiatives of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in their EV policies.
- Hydrogen Fuel Integration: In line with India’s hydrogen mission, the policy will incorporate hydrogen fuel for industrial and transportation applications, similar to the approach taken by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in their policies.
JOULE: Enhancing Last-mile Connectivity
The ‘JOULE (Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Connectivity)’ initiative was introduced during the Climate Pledge event. This EV charging network aims to enhance last-mile connectivity through the establishment of multiple charging stations powered by renewable energy, similar to the efforts of Delhi and Uttarakhand in their policies.
Comprehensive Ecosystem Development
The policy aims to create a comprehensive ecosystem around electric vehicles, including aspects of battery cell manufacturing, disposal, and recycling. This holistic approach mirrors the initiatives of Maharashtra and Gujarat in their policies to promote a complete EV ecosystem.
Sustainability and Skill Development
The policy emphasizes sustainability by providing incentives for companies that adopt green processes and employ women. A vendor development program, in partnership with NASSCOM, will train 3,000 companies in manufacturing 4.0 techniques with a focus on sustainability, similar to the skill development initiatives in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh’s EV policies.
Karnataka’s Clean Mobility Policy represents a significant step towards decarbonizing the state and enhancing the overall infrastructure for electric vehicles. By incorporating best practices from other states and aligning with national missions, Karnataka aims to become a trailblazer in sustainable transportation
