Delhi, May 21, 2024 – The Transport Department of the Government of Delhi has awarded Uber, a license to operate bus services under the Delhi Premium Bus Scheme. This makes Delhi the first state in India to grant such a license to a ride-hailing aggregator.
Through the “Uber Shuttle” option in their app, customers will be able to pre-book seats on Uber’s bus routes connecting business districts with residential areas in Delhi. The buses will be air-conditioned and equipped with features like live route tracking and estimated time of arrival updates.
An official from the Delhi Transport Department stated, “The Government of Delhi is committed to improving public transportation and diversifying mobility options to streamline commuting for residents. We are pleased to provide Uber the opportunity to leverage its global expertise and technology to enhance the commuting experience in Delhi.”
Uber’s Shuttle service is an expansion of a pilot program initially tested in Delhi-NCR and later launched in Kolkata in partnership with the West Bengal government. Amit Deshpande, Head of Uber Shuttle in India, said, “Buses are a crucial addition to our product lineup as we work to cater to the mobility needs of all Indians. Following successful pilot runs, we are excited to officially bring the convenience of Uber’s technology to bus services in Delhi.”
The buses, operated by local fleet partners, will accommodate between 19 to 50 passengers each.
